Failed Twonky Upgrade - Want to blank the firmware

Hi All

Wondering if anyone can help, i've seen a couple of posts saying how to do this, just wanted a bit of clarity before I started playing with firmwares though!

Tried to install twonky 7 a few months ago, it failed, I just left it as I've never actually needed to use it. Tried to reinstall today using the twonky upgrade on this forum, but it still comes back to the same state (see below)

When I load up twonky on :9000 i get a pretty much blank frame - img825.imageshack .us/img825/766/twonky.jpg

I'm wanting to completely reinstall the firmware, which should tidy up the system directories and allow a completely clean install?
Currently running the most recent version, 01.02.14, whats the easiest way to reinstall the firmware? And do I lose my files that are on the drive or just configs/settings etc?

Thanks

www-data can not access /shares/

Hi,

I am using my MBL pretty much as it came out of the box. All I want to do is to add a second http site under a new port and read the data for that site from a different location than /var/www.

Creating the new site did work fine and as long as I create the data folder under /var/www everythings works fine. As soon as I try to set the root folder for my site to /shares/SOMESHARE it doesn't anymore. It turns out www-data doesn't have access to any folder inside of /shares/. Adding www-data to the group "share" didn't work, neither did it work when I chown/chgrp'ed the shares to www-data.

 MyBookLive:/shares# ls -l total 256 drwxrwxr-x 3 root share 65536 Feb 16 18:39 4Webserver drwxrwxr-x 9 root share 65536 Nov 4 2011 Public MyBookLive:/shares# su www-data MyBookLive:/shares$ cd 4Webserver/ sh: **cd: 4Webserver/: Permission denied**

Any idea what I can do to get this working?

Twonky 7.0.8 and failing thumbnails

I have successfully installed the latest firmware (01.02.14) and installed Twonky 7.0.8. I have also installed ffmpeg (ipkg install ffmpeg) purely for thumbnail creation. However nothing happens.
I have ensured that the ffmpeg.location points to /opt/bin where the ffmpeg is located (ffmeg in mode 755) {also copied the ffmpeg into /usr/local/twonky/cg-bin just in case) and made sure the ffmpeg-videe-thumb-desc is also locateg in the cgi-bin directory.

Any ideas?

Custom Image

Has anyone tried to build a custom OS image for the My Book Live or My Book Live Duo? I am getting very frustrated with how crappy the WD image is and how much shit they have installed on this thing. I am debating doing it, but not sure if I have the time.

Can't connect at all anymore

I have a 2TB MBWE that was working, but now I can't connect to it at all.

Prior to this problem it seemed to be working fine, but I did have to keep rebooting it if I tried to copy large amounts of data onto it (15GB) either from my PC, via wireless, or from a USB hard drive connected directly to the MBWE.

The only changes that I have made since it last worked are to change the SSID of my wireless router and to change the workgroup that my PC and Netbook belong to.

The MBWE is using a fixed IP addtess (xxx.xxx.0.99) which is outside the range being used by the DHCP server on my router (xxx.xxx.0.100 to xxx.xxx.0.199).

If I open a web browser and enter the IP address, I get a page with a WD logo, a message saying "The system is starting" and a progress bar. It typically shows somewhere between 2% and 10%, but this never goes up. If I refresh the page, the percentage goes down.

I've tried going to mybookworld \ configuration \ index in a web browser, but I get a page not found error.

I can't see it at all through Windows Explorer.

If I press (or press and hold) the power button, nothing happens. If I press and hold the reset button for 20 seconds, nothing happens. The only thing that has any affect, is pulling out the power lead, but when I plug it back in, I still can't connect.

I'm fairly sure it isn't the network cable (as I've tried 3) and als that it is not the router (as I have tried it plugged in to three different sockets).

Does anyone have any ideas? Any help would be appreciated.

Cheers
Mark

Hi ,

Have been searching for the original rootfs image for a mybook live 3TB 02.32.06-006 but cannot find it anywhere.

Is there someone who was a bit smarter and made a backup of the root fs before starting to thinker, if yes could you make it available
for download.

to extract the image :
dd if=/dev/md0 of=/shares/Public/rootfs.img (when errors try /dev/md1).

Some help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanx in advance

Bricked WD

Hi, I've come across the bricked WD MyBook WD20000H2NC and would like to install a new operating system on it, because currently it doesn't boot.

As far as I understand it, I need to install the OS on one of the hard drives that are already in the WD MyBook (they are currently empty). The problem is that the system doesn't boot (naturally, since the disks are not present), but if I attach a bootable USB into it, it doesn't boot from it, why not?

The other option would be getting the disk out of the MyBook, putting it into the laptop, installing the OS on it and then put it into the MyBook again and boot from there.

Are my assumptions correct?

Is there an iso image that I can download from the internet with the default WD installation, which I can just mount and copy onto the disk directly? This way I don't actually have to install the OS, because it's already installed, all I have to do is copy the data over to the right hard drive? I also don't need any recovery of data, since the disks are empty and don't contain any data.

Thank you

Acces to WD MyBook Live files

Hi,

I'm new on the forum and am happy to have found it.

I need support for following issues that I'm experiencing with my brand new External DD.

1.)

I have an "old" computer with XP. I created a private Folder and an user account to connect to it, on the External DD.

I can connect and login to it through local network with my Windows 7 Laptop, but not with XP computer…
I receive an error message saying that I'm not allowed …
How can I fix that ?

2.)

I would like to access to my files per internet using following link : h**ps://externalip/Shared_folder
When I try it, a login windows appears asking for username and password.
I provide information of the account I created, but it does not work…

The same windows always re-appears :" Server *** requires username and password. Message from Server : DeviceUser"

How can I connect to it, using previous link ?

Thanks in advance,

Second attempt at using My Book Live with Macs

I have a 2 TB MyBookLive that froze up about 2 weeks ago and had to send it back to the factory for a replacement. I don't know if the issues I experienced were associated with the Macs that I run in the house and Time Machine (haven't started that again yet), or if it had to do with the ssh-ing that I did via Terminal to get Twonky 7.0 onto the MyBookLive in order to get it to stream to my Sony Blu-Ray player or if it was the MyBookLive update that I ran at the very beginning of the process. There seem to be posts regarding many of these issues and the bricking of the MyBookLive. Guess I am back to square one and looking for some advice on what to change, update… The first thing I have done is enabled ssh and chnged the password with terminal. The second thing I thought about doing was checking the logs on the MyBookLive to see how it is sleeping (it does sleep and then wake up). I can't however find the logs, mainly b/c my ssh skills are poor and I don't seem to be able to "see" the directory strucutre at a glance with Terminal. I think I'll run my my VMWare windows mode and see if that program…Putty? might give me better insight into this.
Any advice? Thanks

Create NAS on blank Harddrive

Hi there,

at first: sorry for my bad english. its not my native language.

I've got a question: I got a 3 TB NAS System from Western Digital, called "My Book live" in an old version that only have a single LAN port as the only possibility to connect.
But the built in 3 TB HDD is to precious for my that i only run it as a network storage so i put the HDD out from the box and put it in my computer, formated it with NTFS.
But i have an "old" 1 TB Harddrive that i want create a NAS Drive from it. But how can i do this? I'm absolutely new with this and got no idea. I know i killed the 3TB Debian Distribution when i formatted it with NTFS to run the HDD on my Computer.

Now i know, i had to install Debian Lenny onto the blank 1 TB Harddrive. But how i should make this? I'm absolutely new in the Unix/Linux section and have no idea how i should start :(

Thanks for your help

Installing Mono

My Linux time is way back and even then, I was bad at it :P So my question is: is there a way of installing Mono with Apache on the My Book Live to be able to run ASPX websites? I've seen Mono may run on ARM… Is it the prerequisite I have to look for?

Thanks for your help!

MyBookWORLD conversion

Hey All,

My blue light MyBookWORLD died a death last week, I am assuming it is component death as the HDD can be heard spinning up when powered.

Anyway, my question is; I found a white light unit without a HDD, if I put my blue light HDD in will it just work? My blue light has a lot of data and a few custom installs which I would rather not have to redo.

Steve

ups..i think it's bricked

All right. I know that it was me who screwed everything.
last night i was trying to setup my torrent client (transmission) on mbl to send an email when torrent is completed.
I was following one tutorial and did:
sudo apt-get install gnome-schedule
which began installing plenty of libraries etc… at that point i've realised it was a mistake.
and indeed it was something to install if u use transmission on ubuntu.
so I did Ctrl-C - yet another mistake..
tried to remove gnome-shedule. since it was not completely installed - obviously - my package manager complained.
I have forced some fixed etc it all failed.. i did reboot. and never came back..

I have tried holding reset button to restore something hoping that it would do more than root password and IP adresses..
But even though it seems that i can ssh to it, but it fails to log root in.
I have tried default (welc0me) and my root password that I had before… but nothing..

since UI is gone i cannot reinstall FW..

therefore..
Please Help!

..connecting to mbl from linux device someone said?
how to do that? what could and couldn't be done from there?

Thank you.

I think my drive is failing, replacing hdd questions

I notice that after awhile my older white light 1TB drive is not showing up on my network any more, and if I power it off/on it comes back up and I can access all the files again. There are no errors that I can see, but this seems to be happening with more frequency. I have copied all my files over to my new 2TB live edition, but I'd like to keep using this one.

Do you think the drive is failing? Is there a utility I can test it with?

If the disk is gone, I'd like to replace the drive, I am thinking I should stick with a WD green drive because of power consumption, cooling etc. I know that the OS/firmware needs installing on the new drive and I heard this can be a bit tricky. Can I image the existing drive while it is still readable, and copy the image to the new drive using my USB drive reader?

If so, can I do this from a 1TB to a 2TB or 3TB drive? I figure if I am going to the trouble of replacing the drive I may as well stick a bigger one in there.

If I can't do an image copy, what is the best way to do this?

thanks

Transfering 2TB Data from WD WE2 to PC

I need to transfer data fast and safe.

From: WD WE2 NAS 2x2TB (max read speed is 5mb)
To: Windows PC , new 2TB Drive

1. With regular network transfer, NAS to PC will take minimum 36 hours of constant copying. (max read speed is 5 mb)
- Can WD WE2 handle such an intensive task without any data corruption for such along time? Is there a way to verify the data after being copied?

Alternative way:
2. I was planing to mount the WD drive into a Windows PC and copy the data on the same size disk on the same PC.
- Do you thing that this is more safe and much faster and will I lose some file attributes during the file system conversion? What program do you recommend?

Thank you!

Messed up users and permissions

Hi all,

while I was trying to get rid of an error message that Cyberduck displayed, I've accidentally messed up with users and permissions.
My MyBook has 3 shares, Configuration, Download and Public.

I think I badly used chown, chmod and chirp commands and I tryied to edit vsftpd config files.

Now I can only connect to the Configuration one via SMB.
I cannot connect to any share via AFP (which I most commonly use)
I can connect to the drive via FTP but it shows empty Configuration and Public folders (user : admin)
I can connect with SSH and webgui.

How do I restore users and permissions to factory so I can browse files via FTP and AFP?

Thanks in advance,
Alberto

How can I access WWW locally after installing Feature Pack?

$

I've been playing about over the last few days so I could have some files hosted with Access Book, and also have a small Web Server running.
Got all this up and running using Feature Pack from highlevelbits fr

All working great apart from on my Mac when I try to access the WWW folder to change the hosted web files etc

When I try to access WWW on my Mac after the drive is mounted and I've logged in as Admin I get the following message about permissions….
The folder “WWW” can’t be opened because you don’t have permission to see its contents.

How can I access WWW on my Mac to put files on the MyBook?

Thanks.

p.s. I have searched the Forum to see if this has been mentioned before I couldn't find any articles on it.

Fix Shared Storage Manager

$

I bought a used MBWE II (Blue Ring) from a guy who apparently didn't know what to do with it. I wiped it with the FORMAT and RESCUE from the highlevelbits site. MyBook boots, but offers no public share on the Windows network and has a truncated Shared Storage Manager — drive management has only one option — "Safely remove USB drive." It also only shows 1TB, which makes me think it defaulted to Raid 1, and I'd rather have Raid 0. I can SSH into the machine, and have installed Optware. But I'm stumped as far as making the stock WD firmware work. What am I doing wrong?
