What are the default user/group for Share and sub-folders?

I messed with users and groups and somehow newly created files in my Public folder are always executable now?
The only way to do that(I think ) is to assign user, group and settings to the folders. Can someone tell me defaults:
I can help you do that for me :
Login via ssh()

 cd / ls -l

Post the output, should look like that:

 drwxrwxr-x 13 root www-data 65536 Jan 24 07:58 CacheVolume drwxr-xr-x 7 root root 65536 Jan 23 23:02 DataVolume drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 4096 Sep 10 12:26 bin drwxr-xr-x 3 root root 4096 Jan 24 07:55 boot drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 4096 Sep 10 12:21 debootstrap drwxr-xr-x 12 root root 2500 Sep 10 12:29 dev drwxr-xr-x 78 root root 4096 Jan 24 08:07 etc drwxr-xr-x 3 root root 4096 Sep 10 12:21 home drwxr-xr-x 10 root root 4096 Sep 10 12:27 lib drwx------ 2 root root 16384 Sep 10 12:29 lost+found drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 4096 Sep 10 12:21 media drwxr-xr-x 6 root share 65536 Jan 22 09:01 nfs drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 4096 Sep 10 12:21 opt dr-xr-xr-x 110 root root 0 Dec 31 1969 proc drwxr-xr-x 5 root root 4096 Jan 24 08:04 root drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 4096 Sep 10 12:26 sbin drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 4096 Sep 10 12:21 selinux drwxr-xr-x 6 root share 65536 Jan 22 09:01 shares drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 4096 Sep 10 12:22 srv drwxr-xr-x 12 root root 0 Dec 31 1969 sys drwxrwxrwt 13 root root 1300 Jan 24 08:34 tmp drwxr-xr-x 14 root root 4096 Sep 10 12:28 usr drwxr-xr-x 12 root root 4096 Sep 10 12:29 var

Hard drive compatibility...

Hello, got a white light x2 shell in the mail to me right now, I'm just doing some research on what drive models will work with it. I remember seeing a page I believe on this site with confirmed WD models that work. I have a WD2ears… And I remember it works… But I would like to keep that for my other nas as a hot swap backup. Can anyone forward me the link to where I can find out what models work with my unit. Thank you in advance.

Crazy idea I have....

I need to some expertise here from everyone because I had this idea if it was possible to somehow modify QPKG packages from QNap to install and use on our WD My Books drives? Qpkg from what I can find out is based on ipkg but with some extras to do a self install. I for one would like to upgrade Twonky or get miniDNLA working.
Thoughts?

WebDAV Multi-User

Hi All,

I have WebDAV installed on my MyBookWORLD and I can use it to access the HDD from outside of my local network. I wanted to use Twonky for this but there appears to be no way as it drops the DynDNS address for the local IP everytime. Anyway, I have family members and friends I would like to give access to, however I don't want them to be able to access EVERYTHING. I have personal stuff on there, but sharing pictures and videos would be nice.

So basically, is there a way I can setup multiple users (I know I can have many users in general) with different levels of access (i.e. limited to certain folders and files)?

Please note, I have limited Unix skills so I am hoping someone can give me some detailed, even step-by-step guidance.

Regards,
Steve

SMART data from my MBWE2 . One of my drives is dying?

SMART data from my NAS . One of my drives is dying?
WD MY BOOK WE2, NAS RAID MIRROR 2x1T
_

Long time lurker here :)
You created a great place.
I thank you for that.

My problem.
Is one of my drives dying?
NAS Worked with 95% of capacity for 6 months.
Frozes frequently. Unloaded data and did a factory reset. Few times.
WD gui reports -GOOD- status for both drives. Unloaded mionet, twonky etc. Very clean.

Now seems fine but I am suspicious. Sometimes is very slow. Drive is currently empty and sometimes it takes 10 minutes to boot. No more freezing.
I run smartctr and on drive "SDA" i got errors on ID 196,197,198,199.
Will someone please advice ? I need to know how reliable this drive is. Also, Is there smartctr test that I can run and get some detailed info?
Thank you!
KraFT

Help with Sony Bluray Player

$

I have installed the 30 day trail version of Twonky 7.0.9 special on the My Book Live drive and am having trouble getting any videos to play. Had this problem back when version 5 of Twonky was on the drive so really no change. Followed Dav-M's procedure and do indeed seem to have the correct version of Twonky installed. I can access the web interface via the GUI and via the ip:9000 web page. When I look at sharing>media receivers on the ip:9000 interface I can see the list get populated and then shrink. Seems like I have read that this is not a big issue, but more of an annoyance. Although the Bluray player does disappear from the list. In the settings>media tab of the GUI on the WD My Book Live the Bluray player stays around and is not blocked. I have edited 2 files with nano via terminal on my mac. One is the sony bluray.xml file where I have commented out a few lines (sorry I don't seem to be able to post links to this wiki yet since I'm a newbie) and I changes the parameters to fixed in another file (forget exactly what that was right now, but might have been that same file…yes?
All of this does not seem to hall with the playing of videos. I have a .mkv, .mov, .divx, .you name it on the drive and none will play. Any thoughts about what might be going wrong? The message I get is something along the lines of corrupt or missing file

Thanks for any and all help

What limits the size of a SATA hard-drive on a particular controller?

$

Maybe this is a real dumb-[donkey] question, but ever since I upgraded my MBW-II (blue-ring) from a pair of 500 gig to a pair of 1T drives, (http://mybookworld.wikidot.com/upgrade-blue-ring-500gb-the-easy-way), I have been wondering… . .

What are the real, where-the-rubber-meets-the-road, limitations on the size of a hard drive that can be hooked up to a SATA controller, and why?

I already understand the existence of certain limits:

  • The ancient and crufty "msdos" partitioning scheme will only go so far - and at 2T it's busting it's britches.
  • As a corollary, will your file-system even boot using something like a GPT, (etc.), partitioning scheme?
  • The limits to the size of a hard drive in your particular OS.

Aside from that - are there any real reasons why someone could not stick a SATA drive of arbitrary size into a system? (15T, 3.5P? etc… .)

One of the main reasons I'm asking is because I have a couple of 2T drives sitting around, that are just itching with the idea of climbing into my MBW-II - just for the heck of it.

I already have a perfectly good, working set of 1T drives in that box. And I know that if I try it with 2T drives, it won't catch fire, the GPL / Free Software Foundation won't sue me, and I won't go to Hell for it.

So, (assuming that the operating system can handle it), is there anything that intrinsically limits the size of a hard drive that I can attach?

What say ye?

Adding 80mm Fan to My Book Live Duo

$

Okay, Maybe I'm crazy but when I saw my drive temp over 55c I had a heart attack.
Looking online I found a few people talking about using laptop cooling pads using usb power.
That would probably work well but I need not want to give up the USB. So I started looking at other ideas.

So here is what I've rigged up.
The 12v WD power -> DC socket (2.5x5.5mm - RadioShack size 'n') -> split to 12v 80mm case fan and to a DC plug in to MBLD.
Then I put the fan on top pulling air out/up and twisted some CAT5 thought the top lid of the MBLD to hold the fan.
Temps are running around 35c range after extended use and around 25c at idel.

Here are two pictures:

 dropbox[dot]com/s/1inyrl8ayst43j7/2013-02-09_15-15-15_125.jpg dropbox[dot]com/s/qd0esp67dda4af0/2013-02-09_15-15-31_239.jpg

Only issue is the fan is kinda loud, so I'll either need to buy a quieter one (this one is probably 15+ years old),
add in a fan controller, or find a way to make it thermally controlled.

So am I crazy? how are you keeping your Live Duo cool?

MBL Duo to MBL Back-Up

$

Hello,

I currently have a 3TB MyBookLive that I am using for streaming media to my 4 rendering devices. The overall plan was to get that working and then move the media to a 6TB MyBookLiveDUO (RAID 1) and use the existing 3TB drive as a back-up to the DUO (and move the media server to the DUO).

Is there a way to do back up the MBL to the DUO and avoid PC intervention?

From what I've read it seems like I will lose a some streaming performance since the Duo appears to be slower. Is this true? I would think it would only be slower on the write side.

Any help and/or opinions would be appreciated!

Debian-installed "white light" goes offline

$

It's a 2 x 500Gb drive White Light unit. I've broken the RAID so it's JABOD and installed Debian Squeeze on there as per the instructions floating around on here.

After some fiddling (I'm no expert!), I managed to get SAMBA working for my PCs and Macs to use the box for file storage and backups. Then got minidlna going so I could stream to Xbox, Sony media player and tablets. All fine and dandy and working for 2-3 weeks until this weekend.

For some reason the box is now going "offline" every few hours. It can be mid-stream, or when it's sat otherwise idle. Everything goes, but the drive itself doesn't power down. Network shares vanish, streaming halts, I can't connect via SSH and it even vanishes from the router's "connected hardware" table.

If I press the power button on the back, it whirs and clicks then shuts down after 15-20 seconds. I then wait, power it back up again and a minute or so later all is fine and dandy.

I've checked the messages and system logs and can't spot anything obvious. When I hit the power button to down it, the logs are reporting a graceful shutdown so the box is definitely live in some way at that point.

I'm happy to post relevant areas of any scripts, logs and so on up here if anyone reckons they could have a clue? I don't think it's power saving or anything as I've made *no* tweaks or changes since I got it working a couple of weeks ago. The only thing I can even remotely think that could have caused an issue is the fuses in our cupboard tripping about a week back which will have caused the box to drop offline without being shut down correctly. However, it's worked fine for about 5-6 days after this before the problem I'm having has shown itself.

Any thoughts before I bite the bullet and let the wife spend £130 on a new unit?

MyBook 1To : 503 error server overloaded

Hi everyone,

Sorry for bothering you with this problem, but I haven't found anything yet…

Actually, I have installed on my WD the feature pack, with transmission, web server and access book. Everything works great after configuring my routeur for accessing to everything from everywhere.

But my WD seems to have some problems for several days now : during the day, when I try to access to the WD & feature pack Admin Interface, it sometimes tells me that the WD is overloaded, with a 503 error, and it keeps getting this error until I reboot the whole thing.
On the other hand, I have access to everything else, which is quiet strange hm? Transmission keeps working, such as Access book (web server), etc.

Any idea why please?
The things I've found for the time being are not solving anything, so thanks a lot if someone can help me :)
