Hi All,

i do have an MBWE II white light and it seems that something went really wrong…..
After boot it remains at a state which only the bottom led is blinking.

According to the manual this should be the "Powering up state" but it stays there forever.
Also i can not perform a "factory reset"…

Any ideas?

My Book World Edition II (white light)

The disk becomes unavailable after a certain time.

The disk becomes unavailable after a certain time. To solve the problem, I tried:

- Factory defaults
- Reinstall latest version of firmware

but without success. When I reset the drive become accesable for certain time for example day or two and then

become unavailable. Disk responds to ping, signal lights are on but is not accessable fom computer. Also, the web

interface is not reachable. Any advice is welcome. Thank you in advance. RG

I have the 1 TB white light edition and it's running the 01.02.14 with MioNet 4.3.1.13 firmware but I would like it to run the Mybook Live firmware so I can use this device with my iPhone apps. Is it possible to have it run the my book live firmware?

Thanks

Heatsink & Fan on CPU?

Basically, what I want to do is install a heatsink and fan in my MyBook Live. I'm currently running Gentoo Linux on it (kernel 2.6.32.63) and it keeps locking up while running Deluge or any high CPU task.

I'm getting rather sick of it so I'm planning on doing a few mods to it so the processor stops overheating. Better than leaving it in the freezer.

Has anyone done this?

Network Speed

Hi

Is there anyway I can increase the network transfer speed on my White Light ?
Sending a 500MB file from my Linux server to the NAS is running @ 1.4MB

The Linux server has a gigabit connection, the NAS is connecting at 100M

I've tried upgrading Samba, disabling twonky etc nothing seems to have helped.

Thanks

NFS Mounts

Hi

I've had this working before but for some reason when I try an NFS mount I get :

mount.nfs: access denied by server while mounting 192.168.0.1:/Test

/var/log/messages on the White Light shows:

Oct 29 14:48:19 MyBookWorld daemon.warn mountd[6219]: refused mount request from 192.168.0.10 for /Test (/): no export entry

If I check /etc/exports I see :

/nfs/Public *(ro,all_squash,sync,insecure,anonuid=65534,anongid=1000)
/nfs/Download *(ro,all_squash,sync,insecure,anonuid=65534,anongid=1000)
/nfs/Test*(rw,all_squash,sync,insecure,anonuid=65534,anongid=1000)

The mount command I'm using is:

sudo mount -t nfs 192.168.0.1:/Test Test/

Any ideas why this is failing ?

Thanks

Cheat MyBookLive into MyCloud

Hi ya'all,

I was wondering if there is a way to cheat the firmware upgrade into thinking MyBookLive is MyCloud and by thus getting the extra functionality that comes with the MyCloud firmware?
Is this path worth investigation?

My CurrentFirmwareDesc : "MyBookLive " "02.43.03-022" "Core F/W" "1379357529" "1381531702"

Could someone help me adding a new cronjob?
I've inserted a script in folder /etc/cron.hourly, but it isn't running.
I've also tried to create a new cronjob with crontab -e, but didn't run either.
Is not a problem with the .sh file, it runs fine when I execute the command ./noip.sh

Here's the crontab commands I've tried:

 */15 * * * * /usr/noip.sh */15 * * * root /usr/noip.sh

iscsi support

I just acquired a WD MyBook Live Duo and have discovered that I can't see it with my OS (server 2008 R2). I tried enabling my Computer Browser, NETbios over TCP/IP v4 and SSD Discovery services only to discover I couldn't find it or point to it with iscsi like you can with any other SAN device. None of the other WD software seems to find it either and I've installed the SED driver. My next step is to try putty to SSH but I have no experience with this. Can someone point me to a guide where I can use Server 2008 R2 to talk to this device? Do all the MyBook Live devices use the 192.168.1.215 IP address?

SSH access without password

ssh will not allow passwordless logins (using key pairs) unless the users home directory permissions conform to a specific criteria. But all users share a home directory which means that the criteria cannot be satisfied. I have tried adding a user in the usual Linux manner (adduser) but it gets deleted the next time the web interface is used (as you would expect I suppose). What I need to do is change the new user script that is run when adding a user in the web interface. Does anyone know where that script is so that I may edit it?

Deleted Folder Share

Hello,

I have a WD world book 1 TB White Light and I accidentaly deleted a share. I have a lot of data I require in that share. I have now taken the disk out of the casing and connected it to my Laptop using a SATA connector. I used a recovery software (EaseUS) which detected all the files from the deleted share but the folder names and file names are gone. It gets all the files sorted in order of type.

Is there anyway I can get the folder names back and the file names? Is there any other software I can use? Any help would be much appreciated.

Best regards
Jacka

My Book Live as VMWare Player server?

$

Hi,

I'm quite sure it is possible the question is, how much effort is it? And is it realistic for me? I have some unix skills but surely not in depth administrator level.

Some details about my MBL:
cat /etc/issue
Debian GNU/Linux 5.0

cat /proc/version
Linux version 2.6.32.11-svn70860 (steveh@steveh-pc) (gcc version 4.2.2) #1 Thu May 17 13:32:51 PDT 2012

getconf LONG_BIT
32

sudo apt-get install build-essential linux-headers-‘uname -r`
Reading package lists… Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information… Done
E: Couldn’t find package linux-headers-2.6.32.11-svn70860

So most likely I would have to do a kernel upgrade. But before I start this venture I would like to know whether there is a chance at all to get it up and running?

Thanks a lot in advance

Twonky not visible in network

$

I used my WD live book to stream content via Twonky (by android using bubbleupnp). Unfortunately Twonky is no longer available in the network. I can view the content via explorer on PC or via ES explorer on android. But streaming via Twonky does not work anymore . I can access the dashboard of the MBL, Twonky is enabled and indexes the media files. I can also start Twonky itself through port 9000, and enter by SSH. Firmware MyBookLive 02.43.03-022 : Core F/W

My router is a Zyxel P - 2812HNU -F1 . I have checked the network settings. It appeared UPnP state was disabled (oddly I have not done this myself) . I, of course enabled this setting. Then I did a reset both on the Router and the WD Live book (the latter also with reset button pressed at startup ). On the UPnP list in the router I see there are several media servers , but nothing with the IP number of the WD live book .

New guide to downgrade HD to a smaller one (Windows based)

$

First of all, say hello as I did not find any thread for introducing myself. Second, sorry for my english skills as they are not very accurate, I'll try to do my best.

So, this is the workaround. I received a WD MyBook Live as christmas gift (1Tb), and first think that came to my mind has been to use it as Media Streamer server for all the devices in the house. But 1Tb HD is oversized for my requirements, and I decided to replace it by a Seagate 250Gb one (enough capacity for me, and I can reuse the 1Tb HD for other purposes).

I started reading this forum and all the things I've seen were related to unbrick, manually repartition the HD and so on, but I felt this was not my case. So, I started with another approach, and when I finished I realized that I did 90% of the things pointed by another guides but using only windows 7, so I'll share my experience here for the people that is not comfortable with Linux.

The reason I used Windows has been due to my inexperience with Linux and the problems generated by the last partition (dataVolume, partition 4). It was oversized (945Gb on a 250Gb disk) and the problems caused by part and fdisk commands, as they don't let me do anything. A Linux user can surely deal with this problem and suggest a solution, but this was not my case.

Sorry, no links as I cannot post them, but quick google search will bring you the programs. Replace " - " with "/" and you will go straight.

This method can be used for single HD units replacing the sector offset by the correct one, no matter the model of the unit. Don't really know if it can be used for mirrored models, but is theoretically possible if both destination disks are identical, simply repeat the procedure twice, one for each disk.

First of all, we need a working "source" HD (the one that comes with the unit), and it has to be configured at least one time. Don't know if this guide will work with an "out of the box" unit, without configuring it first. Probably yes.

1.- We have to dismount it from case and connect it to a USB adapter, free SATA port or anything else on W7 machine. Same for destination disk.
2.- Download "hddguru.com - software - HDD-Raw-Copy-Tool" - HDD Raw Copy Tool, this is an equivalent for linux DD but it clones the entire HD. It is not possible to define a range, but this is not a problem.
3.- Execute the program (as administrator, otherwise it won't show all devices) and select source HD (1Tb) and destination HD (250Gb in my case). Then start copy.
4.- Stop the copy at 12.000.000 sectors.
5.- Download "partitionwizard.com - free-partition-manager.html" - MiniTool Partition Manager, install and execute it. (Sorry, no portable this time). Select MiniTool Partition Wizard on launcher.
6.- Locate the destination disk on list and select 4th partition (it will be shown as GPT and unformatted). Right click and delete partition.
7.- Right click again and create partition. Select EXT4 for formatting as file system and the capacity you want. (EXT4 in my case, please check the correct filesystem on source disk for this partition)
8.- Click on apply changes (Top left of screen)

Once finished, mount the small HD on case and connect it to main and net. It will recreate all the folders on 4th partition automatically, and it will be ready to use.

Additional step: If you want to keep a copy of your OS, use HDD Raw Copy Tool again but select "FILE" as destination HDD. Stop copy after 12.000.000 sectors, as they hold the swap and OS partitions, and you will backup only the first 6Gb (it works for me with 1Tb, maybe for 2 and 3 Tb offset needs to be recalculated). You may need to repeat steps 6 and 7 when you restore the backup.

Notes: In my case, source disk was 1Tb and useful partitons to be copied were 5Gb (approx.), so I stopped the copy at 12.000.000 sectors (I don't know if mirror/swap partitions on greater HDs than 1Tb are 2Gb/489Mb each, so maybe 50.000.000 sectors are safe for all). As GPT table is on first sectors, 4th partition is defined on GPT but contents are not copied.
Here comes the problems. First of all, I mounted again the case and did a Factory reset form webUI, but it formatted 4th partition as ~900Gb. It worked, but copying something on this partition caused the device to enter in fault mode (red led). I connected the 250Gb HD to a PartedMagic machine and tried to resize/delete/make something with 4th partition, but no way. It said that the partiton cannot exceed the disk lenght, no matter which tool I used. So, back to Windows.
Please note that it is not necessary to make a factory reset from WebUI to accomplish this guide, it has been only for information.

Thats all. Hope this procedure can help someone else.
