Hello everyone. I would like some help with a problem i am facing.
I am helping a friend, which has a WD My Book World (blue rings) installed in their office as a network drive.
Recently they started having problems accessing some of the drive's folders/files. After rebooting the device the access problem dissapeared.
When i went there, i couldn't find any problems. Drive was working fine, switches and cables looked ok.
The web interface stated : STATUS OK.
In a hopeless attempt, i changed the network configuration (had dhcp enabled, switched it to static ip), hoping that it was some kind of network disconnection error, and started backing up data through network, to another external usb drive. I also set up a remote control software on another PC to monitor things while i am away.
After a couple of days (during which the backup was still in proccess), i got a call from the office, and was informed that the problem re-appeared. This time i logged in remotely to the office, and opened the WD web interface to see : STATUS drive A failed! The backup copy process was stopeed also of course.
Questions:
1) I couldn't figure out if the device had two 1TB drives in RAID 1 or two 500GB drives in RAID 0. No info is available on the web interface(?). The only option is to change the drive configuration. Is there another way to tell?
2) The backup copy was waaayyy to slow. An amount of about 120 GB was not able to be copied after 3 days. I know that copying those files by a simple copy-paste over the network to a usb device was not a fast proccess, but i couldn't do anything else at the moment. Could this indicate another problem?
3) After rebooting the device the web interface went back to STATUS OK!. Is this normal or does this indicate that drive A is going to fail soon enough?
4) Suppose that i finish backing up the data. What should i do? Should i replace the drive that seems to fail or can i inspect for any other hardware failure of the device?
p.s. My first concern is how to figure out the raid configuration. Both times accessed the web interface (first with STATUS OK, and second with STATUS drive A failed) the Total Space of the device was stated as 1TB. Could this mean that drives are mirrored? On the other hand when the problem appeared some folders were still accessible…
I would really appreciate any info on how to address this issue. I cannot unplug the device until weekend and need to make a plan on how to deal with it.
Thanks in advance.
Constantine.
